Well I meant to post this last week, but with all the insanity that was Photoshop World and Las Vegas it slipped my mind. St. Anthony’s Feast, the last and largest feast of the summer in the North End is a celebration of well, St. Anthony. He is the patron Saint of Italy, and the one people turn to for spiritual guidance in times of sickness. During my 6 hours of walking with the procession many of the areas residents from newborns to the elderly paid their respects by kissing the statue in hopes of being blessed with good health.
Due to having to finish packing for my trip I didn’t get to stay for the entire feast as I did with Fisherman’s a couple of weeks prior, but I will say in the beginning it was definitively the most challenging to get around. I saw more photographers come out of the woodwork for that day then I did for the rest of the feasts combined, and it’s a shame because all of the feasts deserve to be honored and documented with the same spirit.
I made it my own personal photo project this summer to get to the four major feasts for the Sunday procession. I spent the days walking for miles in the scorching August heat, while never leaving the neighborhood. I was able to witness first hand the passion and the sense of family that the Italian population of Boston’s North End has, and I am very proud as an Italian myself to be able to be a part of it. I can say that I came away with some great photos and froze in time some memories for many people.
If you see yourself, family members, or are part of these celebrations in anyway please contact me by going to the contact button in the menu bar at the top of the blog, I would love to hear from you. Without further adieu here are my photos from St. Anthony’s Feast.
