Well I went to my first Sox game of the Season last night, even though they lost it was a great feeling being back in the old ball park! I have to tell you though, Fenway has in my eyes lost a little of its ole’ world charm with the latest round of off season upgrades. I’m not talking about the roof stuff because honestly I haven’t seen it yet, but rather the old grand stand seats. Over the winter they re-did the waterproofing of the concrete in the park, that means all the concrete is new, brand spanking new dull gray concrete that has no character to it at all. The second thing that they did was since they had to pull all the seats to redo the concrete they took the opportunity to strip the old blue grandstand seats to bare wood and metal and repaint them, they also have lost a bit of charm because of this. I mean there was literally almost 100 years of old paint on those things they had bumps and divots you could see all the layers of paint on the areas of the armrests where it had chipped or worn away. Then as if that wasn’t enough, the company that makes the hot dogs re-did the recipe for the beloved Fenway Frank. Yes it was still good, but it wasn’t the same pale red almost gray hot dog that everyone has come to love over the years.
Last season I took some photos of the details of Fenway including the old concrete steps and seats so below are what they used to look like after almost 100 years of use, they wont look like this ever again! Enjoy…
